Holy Smoke Culture Shop is more than a small retail store in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada. Three partners and dedicated activists Dustin Cantwell, Paul DeFelice, and Alan Middlemiss opened Holy Smoke October 15, 1996 intending for it to be more of a political action than a retail venture. Holy Smoke is a sanctuary and rally point for members of the cannabis using community and has been designated by the Church of the Universe as the Holy Smoke Mission of God.

BCCLA: Nelson proposal why police shouldn’t write laws

The BC Civil Liberties Association is calling on the Nelson Police Department to stay out of politics and the Nelson City Council to turn down their proposal that the city conduct illegal warrantless searches of people’s homes. Media reports indicate that the Nelson Police Department is writing the bylaw, instead of Nelson city council or city staff, and indicate that the bylaw will attempt to sidestep constitutional guarantees that require police or other government officials to obtain a warrant before entering and searching someone’s home.

Nelson, British Columbia is a hidden gem inhabited and visited by different people with a common passion for snow culture. Paul DeFelice is one of those people. As a skier for Warren Miller in the ‘80s, he admits to overlooking the beauty of Nelson. “It was a slow evolution to realize what was here and then I was still here for like 10 years as a ski fanatic,” he says. “I knew the people at the hill, but what was going on in Nelson, I didn’t care!” His interest in the little ski town peaked when he felt there was catching up to do. The only trick was how to survive in his new town.

Holy Smoke house arrest more like a prison sentence, Skogstad

House arrest can be more confining than a jail cell.  Former Holy Smoke owners and marijuana advocates Alan Middlemiss, Paul DeFelice and employee Kelsey Stratas, recently saw their jail sentences converted to house arrest by the BC Court of Appeals.  But the conditions of the house arrest currently remain undefined.
